In 2007, while working in real estate sales, Luis Velez was approached by the son of the founder of the Little Caesar Pizza Franchise and was sold on the idea of owning a Little Caesar Pizza Franchise. He immediately contacted the Franchisor and gathered the necessary information.

Luis was confident that his Culinary Arts Training and his wife Claudia's educational background (Bachelors Degree in Labor Law) were business strengths necessary to operate a successful business. Yet, they still had to overcome a key obstacle: financing a start up business.

Luis met with a banker who was interested in the project and who referred him to the SBDC for assistance in writing his business plan. In March 2007, Luis and Claudia Velez met with Julio Estremera, a Certified Business Analyst at Florida Gulf Coast University's Small Business Development Center. Julio provided the assistance they needed in developing their business plan.

Luis and Claudia were determined to purchase ownership rights for a Little Caesar Pizza Franchise. The had the help and support of Julio Estremera CBA SBDC/FGCU, their banker, the franchisor, and their family and friends. With personal savings of $50,000 and other personal assets, they were able to secure an SBA Loan for $175,000, giving them sufficient capital to proceed. Julio spent over 22 hours of counseling time assisting the Velez family in achieving their dream.

The grand opening in March 2008 created 20 part time jobs and 2 full time jobs. At present, the Velez' are meeting all projections and are on their way to managing a very successful business, employing 13 part time and 2 full time employees.

"Excellent service, outstanding support for small businesses, superb resource, counselor's advice was precise and projections were right on target." - Luis Velez
