Dedication of the Rosa Parks Transportation Center - Saturday, February 18th 2006 at 2250 Peck Street downtown Fort Myers with guest speakers: Mayor Jim Humphrey, City of Fort Myers, Dr. Harold Russell, Diversity Committee Chairman, International College, Carletha Griffin, President Lee County NAACP, Harriet Myers, Lee County Black History Society, Veronica Shoemaker, Fort Myers City Councilwoman, and Ray Judah, Lee County Board of Commissioners -- it was an event filled with thought provoking patriotism, harmony, and pride of being Americans…of what we had accomplished together and a vision of the great things to come…ending with the unveiling of the sign and a delish breakfast . Kudos to the Department of Transportation for coordinating such a gratifying and well planned event for all -- in honor of Rosa Parks, the seamstress, who courageously refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus to a white man when ordered to do so by the bus driver…she was arrested and fined, but in 1956, her case led to the United States Supreme Court ruling that segregated public bus service was unconstitutional.
